Child-Parent Psychotherapy Learning Collaborative

The Children's Place is pleased to announce its inclusion in the newly formed National Child-Parent Psychotherapy Learning Collaborative sponsored by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network.  Together with professionals from 11 other sites throughout the United States, the agency has committed to adopt and implement Child-Parent Psychotherapy over the next ten months.  The staff and Board of Directors are excited to have this new tool to help Kansas City children under the age of six and their families whose lives have been disrupted by domestic violence.

As founders of The Children's Place surmised more than thirty years ago, it is now widely recognized that witnessing or experiencing acts of family violence impacts a child's development and increases the risk for behavioral and mental health problems.  Child Parent Psychotherapy is one of a limited number of interventions that has been researched and proven to effectively address the challenges of young children and their caregivers.  The goal of Child-Parent Psychotherapy is to improve the quality of attachment between the child and the parent while simultaneously reducing the traumatic impact of the domestic violence.  It also addresses past unresolved traumatic events the parent may have experienced that are interfering with his/her ability to parent effectively.

In May, all sites will be trained in the intervention nd implementation will begin shortly thereafter.  Over the next ten months,  The Children's Place team, along with the other 11 sites, will participate in conference calls to discuss  implementation, attend two additional group meetings to increase their knowledge/skill, and submit client data to contribute to the research base associated with the intervention.  For more information or to make an Outpatient Treatment Services referral, please contact the Director of Clinical Services at meyerl@tcpkc.org or (816) 363-1898.
