The Cost of Child Abuse

THE COST OF CHILD ABUSE:
Studies show adverse events in childhood carry serious health and societal implications for adults

Dr. Vincent Felitti brings his findings to KC in discussions with doctors, lawmakers and child advocates

WHO: Dr. Vincent Felitti, the former head of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Kaiser Permanent in San Diego, is internationally known for his work with the ongoing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study. Dr. Felitti’s work documents the strong correlation between adverse childhood experiences including child abuse, neglect, other traumatic events such as the loss of a parent or major household dysfunction, and some of life’s most common health problems such as heart disease, liver disease, obesity, alcoholism, illicit drug use, unintended pregnancy and smoking.

WHAT: “The Implications of Adverse Childhood Experiences: A Day with Dr. Vincent Felitti” - Dr. Felitti found the more adverse experiences in childhood the higher likelihood of a difficult life course. These problems not only make life harder for the individual, but cost society in the expenses for medical care, the judicial system and lost productivity. Dr. Felitti will address the local medical, legal, legislative and advocacy professionals on the study’s findings and how these results can be used to guide both medical care and public policy. This program is being sponsored by the following organizations: The Child Abuse Roundtable Coalition; The Children’s Place; Court Appointed Special Advocates of Jackson, Johnson and Wyandotte Counties; Heart of America United Way; Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City; Children’s Trust Fund; Child Abuse Prevention Association; Shook, Hardy & Bacon; Kauffman Foundation; and Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics.
